Income-Based Discounts

Imagine Swimming offers income-based discounted swim lessons and lap swim memberships at the Major Owens Community Center. If you live within Brooklyn Community Board 9 or City Council District 35 and meet the income guidelines, you may qualify for affordable swimming programs. See below for details.

Who Qualifies?: 

Individuals & families with household incomes within 200% of the federal poverty level, based on household size. See the table below.


What’s the discount?:

80%, or a discount of $47.20 per regular 30-minute lesson. Discounted 30-minute lessons cost $11.80 per child, per class. Discounted lap swim membership is $24.80 per month, as opposed to the regular rate of $124.


Applicants will have to prove residence in Community Board 9 or City Council District 35, and acceptable proof of home address is as follows:

  • A valid & current driver’s license, permit, or non-driver ID card

  • A recent bank statement

  • A recent rent statement

  • A recent utility bill, credit card statement, or pay stub

How Do I Register For Discounted Lessons?: Visit the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center membership desk at 1561 Bedford Avenue during income verification hours:

  • Mondays, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM & 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Tuesdays, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Fridays, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Saturday 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM & 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Sunday 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM & 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Bring the following proofs of income, proof of residency, and identification:

  • A government-issued photo ID

  • Your 2 most recent pay statements (they must be issued consecutively) AND

  • W2 from 2024

  • Letter of non-filing from the IRS showing that you were not required to file taxes

Document requirements

  • Documents must be issued from October 2024 to present.

  • Documents with a P.O. Box listed cannot be accepted.

  • All personal information (account numbers, social security numbers, etc) must be redacted from these documents before they are submitted for verification.

  • Please note that documents that contain legible account numbers or social security numbers will not be accepted.
