Gabe grew up in New York City and learned how to swim at age five through his local Y summer camp based in Washington Heights. He continued swimming through the Y's after-school programs for several years, where his love for swimming was fostered. His parents, both swimmers, encouraged him to him to stay with the sport, but his athletic passions found him committed to baseball first. Gabe played college baseball at Lehman College, but frequented his college pool where he continued to refine his strokes. He graduated from Lehman College with a BA in Psychology. Throughout his undergrad years, Gabe worked as a counselor and swim instructor at a summer camp in Scarsdale, NY for five years, where he discovered his love for teaching swimming. He is also a Writing and Literacy tutor at Hostos Community College CUNY, and he continues to play baseball in independent leagues. In his spare time he enjoys music and plays his guitar, ping pong, pool and chess. He notes that has also discovered a passion for hiking and touring the national parks across the nation.
